On one side, the infinite shadow; on the other an atom. #hugo

At that moment she felt all at once that the weight of the bucket was gone. A hand, which seemed enormous to her, had just caught the handle... A large dark form , straight and erect , was walking beside her in the gloom. #hugo

For my part, i have none. #hugo

All the cooks of croix rouge come to me; I patch up their declarations to their true loves. In the morning I write love letters; in the evening i dig graves. Such is life, peasant. #Hugo

The delight we inspire in others has this enchanting peculiarity that, far from being diminished like every other reflection, it returns to us more radiant than ever #hugo

Reading Hugo: 4/3/19

Each one dreams the unkmown and the impossible according to his own nature

The soul helps the body, and at certain moments uplifts it. It is the only bird which sustains its cage.

Misfortune is a good breast for great souls

The realities of life dont allow themselves to be forgotten.

A bit of reflection

#Literature has a deep end, for the patient and skilled, to dig for priceless #pearls.

I wrote on twitter. Then realized

:) #literature has 500 tweets today while #pearls has 1000 tweets. The times!

How to write: A lesson from Hugo

Suddenly a gust of wind, rather more lively than the rest, and probably entrusted with the affairs of spring, flew down from La Pepiniere, rushed upon the walk, enveloped the girl in a transporting tremor worthy of the nymphs of Virgil and the fauns of Theocritus, and raised her skirt, this skirt more sacred than that of Isis, almost to the height of the garter. A limb of the exquisite mould was seen.

Brilliant write up on human expression: 8/10/19

I was reading Hugo again last night.

There is a 10 page dissertation on #architecture in #HunchbackOfNotreDame, when such a subject is deeply loved, by Hugo. it is a brilliant write up on human expression, creativity and architrcture and of all how one articulates in precise terms to which one owes love and life.

There was at this time a license for thoughts written in stone, comparable only to the present freedom of the press. It was the freedom of architecture. #victorhugo

Under pretext of building churches to God, the art grew to magnificent proportiins #victorhugo

Then whoever was born a poet becane an architect. Its Iliad took the form of Cathedrals. #victorhugo

In the three younger sisters, phoenician, Greek, and Gothic architectures, whatever may be the diversity of form inherent in their nature, the meaning is always the same - that is to say liberty, humanity, mankind #victorhugo

They are sufficiently removed from religion to think of their beauty #victorhugo

Human race has never had an important thought which it has not written in stone. Why? Because an idea which has stirred one generation desires to stir others #victorhugo

In the 15th everything changed. Architecture was dethroned. To the stone letters of Orpheyus succeeded the leaden letters of Gutenberg. #victorhugo

Printing: it is human thought laying of one form and assuming another #victorhugo

From last nights Hugo:8/25/19

Providence and man kind were equally unjust. Such a lavish display of misery and torment was needless to crush so frail a creature. #victorhugo

The breeze and the sun beam which vie with each other in sporting among the light curls of its hair. #victorhugo

Notre-Dame,the cathedral was a sure place of refuge; all human justice died upon its threshold #victorhugo

It is night already. The citizens have lighted their candles, and the good God his stars #victorhugo

I always told you, sister, that young scholar ... was a wizard." #victorhugo

Notredame had been to him by turns, as he grew and developed, egg, nest, home, country, universe #victorhugo

One may be a great genius and yet understand nothing of other people's art #victorhugo

With great writers, 9/3/18

Last nights read:

With great writers, I should say great ones for they truly write as states(wo)man, when their novels are long there are often a dozen sections where their writing acquires saturated color that is so pleasing.

From one such section a few excerpts follow:

One of those solemn and impassioned men a meeting with whom always upsets the equlibrium of a sceptic philosopher #victorhugo

Yes, on my honor! At first I loved men, then animals, now i love stones. They are quite as amusing as animals or men, and they are less treacherous #victorhugo

Neither regret nor desire, I have arranged my mode of life #victorhugo

It is keeping up an equilibrium all the same, when one has but a single idea he finds it in everything #victorhugo

Philosophy and independence in rags are far preferable #victorhugo

I would rather be the head of a fly than the tail of a lion #victorhugo

What harm does it do if a poor girl takes shelter under the flying buttresses of Notre-Dame, alongside of the swallows nests #victorhugo

Last night's read:8/30/19

For some moments both were motionless, silently contemplating, he so much grace, she so much ugliness. #victorhugo

More trodden under foot than a pebble #victorhugo

We have very tall towers here; a man who fell from them would be dead long before he touched the pavement; whenever it would please you to have me fall, you need not even say a single word; one glance will be enough. #quasimodo #victorhugo

The above is reminiscent of #Tolstoy in #warandpeace

It is never stronger than when it is utterly unreasonable #victorhugo

It is in the words we craft all misfortunes are carried away. - just me

Last nights read: 8/1/19

From last nights reading of only a few pages of Hunchback of Notre Dame:

Night falls early in January. #victorhugo

Thanks ferryman! Your Hut rests my eyes and make me forget Paris. #victorhugo

Street directly opened before him. it looked so dark. He plunged down it

#victorhugo

At one instant she seemed a mad woman at the next a Queen #victorhugo

Her song troubled his revery but as the swan troubles the water #victorhugo

A list long enough to weary Homer himself #victorhugo

Night falls early in Jan 8/1/19

The 10 pages or so starts with the line

"Night falls early in January."

The simplicity, perhaps the elegance of the line, I already know I was in for a treat for the next few pages.

Elegance is so predictable when inspired by that simple begining spark. It is often true in writing.

Like waters coming off a good spring tend to be sweetest for some time.

Behind living on a little: 2/9/19

Behind living on a little lies the art of living on nothing. They are two rooms the first is obscure, the second is utterly dark #victorhugo

The devotion of one man had given strength and courage to all #victorhugo

The best men are often compelled to delegate their authority #victorhugo
