7:30 Thursday, the onset

I picked my son up from the day care at 5. We both went and picked up his sister from JCDS. Played a little on the play ground at JCDS. Went to publix to get some groceries.

Picked up some pre-cooked non spicy chicken for dinner. The kids bought some candy and bubble gum.

What could be consumed in the van was consumed and the rest dispensed generously on the floor. I go home, unpack and had that chicken for Dinner.

The chicken was so awfully made, I am so surprised no one sued Publix for that chicken.

The kids showered and Narayan was watching TV. Around 7:30, with no warning, he just threw up some on the carpet before I rushed him to the bathroom where he pretty much threw up the rest.

The clean up was painful, but got it done in the next hour or so. From that point he was throwing up all night. Every fiften minutes.

There wasn't a towel that wasn't used up. Every blanket was dirty. After a few times he was just throwing up a little bit of yellow stuff everytime. All night I was catching his spit pretty much. On top of that he had a slight cough. I was kind of glad it acted like an early warning system jolting me up from my barely awake state.

Meanwhile I have looked up on google how best to treat this thing.

Is it possible it is food poisoning...

An elaborate article from emedicine on food poisoning

I wasn't sure if this is a case of virus or food poisoning. Because no one in the house was sick so far. There was no symptom that Narayan was sick at all until he threw up.

There was about an hour and half between the time he ate and he blurted all out. The publix chicken didn't look too savory in retrospect. I am suspecting the food poisoning at that point.

If it was virus why didn't have any symptoms earlier in the day? But again if it was poisoning how come Kavitha got it a day later and me another later and Niko another day later?

Also when we called the doctor on Friday we were told there were lot more cases of virus going on. So probably it was virus.

Nevertheless it was a puzzle how the virus showed up so suddenly? Not sure what the trigger points are. They all seem to happen right after dinner at night?

It is especially serious if they are not keeping fluids down. In that case there is no good way to keep them hydrated other than through somekind of an iv in a hostpital.

Satya - Tuesday, May 30, 2006 3:16:08 PM

What kind of fluids can they take ...

The recommendations seem to vary outside of pedialyte. But my kid hates all flavors of pedialytes and its derivatives in the market.

I was suggested to use gatorade if needed. He hates them equally well, except one which is plain in color resembling water. That's basically what he used for this 36 hour ordeal.

I have also given him ginger ale with limited success. The recommendation is to flatten it out.

Water seem to be about the worst possible option. Although he craved it, as soon as he takes a sip, the whole sip and some came right out.

Satya - Tuesday, May 30, 2006 3:17:39 PM

Recommended fluids

Pedialyte
Gatorade
Flattened sodas

What not to drink

No milk
No water
(No carbonated sodas)

Satya - Tuesday, May 30, 2006 3:18:34 PM

What I have actually used

Gatorade (one with no color)
Ginger Ale (lightly carbonated and flat)

Satya - Tuesday, May 30, 2006 3:20:43 PM

How do you know if he is dehydrated...

Probably there are good medical ways to find this out.

But for a naker eye this is what I have noticed...

He will be asking for water every few minutes. This started right after 6 hours. This got really worse after 12 hours.

annonymous - Tuesday, May 30, 2006 3:24:46 PM

8AM next morning ...The 12 hour mark

He is still throwing up. We called in with the nurse. She basically advised us what is online. Keep him with fluids the rest of the day and around 7 in the evening (24 hour mark) feed him some soup.

As the day progressed he was not keeping any fluids. He didn't have any favor. No diarrea at this time. And he did not use the bathroom at al so far.

Satya - Tuesday, May 30, 2006 3:27:26 PM

3 pm next afternoon ...19 hours: Time for a shot

We called the Nurse again. We were asked to bring him in. They checked the heart beat. There are signs of dehydration as his heart rate went up. Not sure how much, it was clear the way he was clarmoring for water.

They gave him a shot to stop the vomiting. This put him to sleep and stopped the vomiting for about 2 hours.

Satya - Tuesday, May 30, 2006 3:32:54 PM

10 PM that night ...

The shot immediately stopped vomiting.

He kept the liquids for about 2 hours.

He threw up again in another hour pretty much all the liquid.

We were told to give him to give 2 ounces (1/4th of a cup) every hour. But I am not sure how much kept of that and how much he threw up again.

By around 8, he already threw up 3 times. I was pretty sure I had to go to the emergency.

I gave him a quick shower, put on some clothes and gave him some more liquids.

I packed his bags and ready to leave. "One more time, I am leaving" I told myself. But luckily he slept through for another hour. I woke him up every hour for the next few hours and gave him Gatorade plain. He was able to keep them down.

When it rains it pours...

Around 1pm I heard my daughter coming down and lying down on the other side of the bed. I asked her if she was feeling ok. She said she was fine. With in two minutes I hear a whining, and between the time I ran from this side of the bed to the other she already threw up on the bed.

While my son rested for the rest of the night, my 8 year old threw up a few more times until she emptied herself.

Satya - Tuesday, May 30, 2006 3:39:07 PM

Saturday morning...

It was relatively stable by Saturday morning. Narayan slept the rest of the night. Kept all the fluids down. Took some more of Gatorade in the morning.

My daughter threw up all she can, and was a bit better in the morning. She didn't seem to suffer from liquids problem as she kept them down ok.

I made some soup and fed them for lunch. Both kind of nibbled at it. Saturday night was pretty uneventful. Narayan had a slight temperature. I gave him Motrin and he seem to take that well.

Satya - Tuesday, May 30, 2006 3:44:59 PM

Sunday..the day of diarrhea

On sunday I have started noticing my son going back to his quietness and holding his stomach. He had a case of diarrhea all day. I must have gone through 6 underwares, and 3 pants. Although far better than the day before, he still didn't eat much in three days, and looks awful.

Finally around 3 he seemed a bit better.

Satya - Tuesday, May 30, 2006 3:53:54 PM

Mending the mind..

At this point both my son and daugther seem so tentative with everything, they didn't seem to have any idea what it is like to get better.

So despite, and against, my judgement I got them ready and told them we will go to the park.

I cleaned them up, and took some bread and headed for the small pond to feed fish. It was overcast and any people on the road, perhaps the long weekend.

The fish came in droves. I took a long branch and managed to convert the grocery bag into a fish trap and managed to snap fairly small fish with it. My son was so thrilled to see this fish.

And then we went to Burger King ate a bit of everything, played on the play ground and went to Target bought a dinosaur for my son and a "build a bear" for my daughter and we were home by 9.

They slept quite peacefully after that. I would like to think the outcome is not coincidental.

It was a different story with me though. At 10 I found myself throwing up. I saw my son come around tap me on my back to see if I was ok, as I was leaning over the toilet and throwing my guts out.

Satya - Tuesday, May 30, 2006 4:00:33 PM

Monday, Memorial day, 4th day...

When we all woke up, there is still the lingering flu. We kind of went along the day usual but no one really had the appetite.

Had some breakfast, cleaned up the house, and went to publix. Bought something they wanted to eat. Obviously all their interests started and ended with cheese. Macaroni this and macaroni that. That's what they ate. They seemed to be fine with it.

We went to a movie later that day and that meant the popcorn with butter. So we watched the new hedge movie.

My daugher asked me if I liked the movie. I said it was ok. She then said that I never really like any movies. I told her that every movie I watched in the last 8 years, since she was born, were all children's movies and that too more than once.

Ofcourse, she concluded "What's wrong with children's movies?"

Satya - Tuesday, May 30, 2006 4:05:35 PM

In conclusion...

1. At the first sign of vomiting or diarrhea get a collection of pedialyte like drinks, preferably in all flavors

2. Find a way to manage mess: pails, blankets, towels, dishwashing liquids etc.

3. Anti nausea medicines don't really work. I have tried every one of them. Not much luck at all.

4. After 12 hours, if you are not keeping liquids, visit the Doctor or the emergency

5. For older children the worst may last a night and the discomfort for a couple of days

6. For younger children the worst may last 24 to 36 hours. Prepare for a shot and even emergency IV if the shot does not control throwing up.

Tuesday

I stayed home. woke up late. Gave waffles for breakfast. Ate well. Gave triaminic later for day time. went to the zoo. watched stingrays and spent the most afternoon there. He walked the whole zoo by himself. I usually had to pick him up even when he was healthy. This time he walked it all. Came home and he had some rice and chicken. Gave him pediacare night rest and motrin.

Wednesday

I went to work leaving him home with his sister. Apparently he woke up crying saying he couldn't stand up. I am suspecting swelling in the joints again. I am suspecting reaction to Motrin.

Came home and took him to Dr Sauer. She believes it is myocitis that could follow the tail end of a flu.

Treatment is to give tylenol and cold medicine when needed.

Hope so. She suggested a possible test on Friday if it persists.

myositis

Myositis (my-OH-sigh-tiss) is a rare disease in which the immune system chronically inflames the body's own healthy muscle tissue. Persistent inflammation progressively weakens the muscles. No one knows what triggers the immune system's attack. Myositis can take several forms, usually develops slowly over time and can range in severity from mild to debilitating or worse. Both children and adults can get it.
