Recently I had to resuscitate a totaly dead Toshiba Protege laptop. It only took me weeks and weeks to do that. See later in this page for links to that subject as it is a topic by itself.

In short I had to order repair media from toshiba website. I was able to bring it back to life. Then I have installed bitdefender for antivirus.

As i try to log into bitdefender chrome will not display the flash site. Chrome is supposed to update itself with the latest flash. but when i check the chrome version number (Go to: chrome menu/about google chrome) I see an error indicating it is not able to connect to the server.

I have tried reinstalling it. No luck. not able to connect to server.

i have searched far and wide and no solid input. I am documenting here what you need to do.

the short answer is uninstall all google software using the control panel and wait for an hour. This will uninstall the google update.exe then you need to reinstall chrome.

the google update.exe is used by all google software on your desktop. So it might have been installed by any number of routes.

There is no direct uninstall of this software.

I will document here some more related information in the rest of the document.

Here is the gist of that link

Error 7 means the update was downloaded successfully, but it failed to install properly.

Try restarting your computer. Then check your Windows Task Manager and see if GoogleUpdate.exe or GoogleUpdateOnDemand.exe appears in the list of processes. If it does, try updating again through the browser again. If you're still encountering problems, try reinstalling Google Chrome from

GoogleUpdate.exe

Search for: GoogleUpdate.exe

This is the program that all of google programs use to get their updates and whatever else that google choose to do with it.

So unless you really want to disable or remove it dont do it with out a reason. Of course to reinstall chrome or to fix the error that is what you need to do precisely.

So how do you remove google updater the right way?

Go to control panel
Remove all applications that belong to google
(just look for the name google and hope that is all)
wait for an hour

if this doesnt' work (it did work for me!) then use one of the registry mucking links above suggested by youtube and a host of others.

good news in the end.

satya - 3/25/2013 8:52:35 AM

what I have suspected before arriving at this solution

may be bitdefender is blocking the updates
may be disabling java in chrome is messing with me

Now I know that these are not the problem.

Most likely cause

Toshiba repair disks put the chrome from 2 years ago and the update servers at google have changed!! wish googleudpate tells me that!!!
