When to use quotes inside of a running text

What are guidelines for placing quotes around words or phrases in a sentence?

Watch out for "so that"

I seem to use this phrase a lot. What is more appropriate? On reexamination I seem to replace this with "to"

For method calls and variables use the (code) tag and not the quotes

Atleast it is clear that, for variable names or any code related key words in running text use the (code) tag and not the quotes
